Ignorant Things That Have Come Up During the Haiti Crisis

- Ignorant White AND Black Christians siding with Pat Robertson about his " Haiti pact with the Devil" comment.

  • How is one to interpret such an assertion? Apparently, Robertson was referring to a voodoo ceremony in 1791 that some historians believe was a spark for the revolution. The call to revolt was issued by, Dutty Boukman a voodoo priest and leader of the Maroon slaves. The resulting uprising, which ultimately led to Haiti's independence, claimed the lives of thousands of colonialists and slaves... Earthquakes answer to no demon, and the shifting of tectonic plates should be no mystery to 21st-century man. (from Washington Post article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/15/AR2010011502420.html?hpid=opinionsbox1 )
  • This pagan ceremony has long been referenced by various Christian sources as the "pact with the devil" that began the Haitian revolution. According to Gothenburg University researcher Markel Thylefors, "The event of the Bwa Kayiman ceremony forms an important part of Haitian national identity as it relates to the very genesis of Haiti." (from wiki aricle on Dutty Boukman: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutty_Boukman )

- Just the general ignorance about the nation of Haiti, it's rich history, and the Caribbean.

- People waiting to give $ because they don't trust organizations: A friend of mine actually mentioned his experience working for a development organization gives him reason to make a decision by the end of the month about who he will donate to. REALLY? It's going to take you THAT long to decide??? I HATE how people over-think simple help, ESPECIALLY when as it relates to people of color helping other people of color. If your country was in the same condition as Haiti is right now, how quickly would you want people to donate money? Too many Black Americans have been brainwashed past simple common sense...

- The BLATENT lack of coverage by Fox News. Secondly, the BLATENT racist commentary by individuals like Bill Oreilly, Glen Beck, and Sean Hannity. (As well as Rush Limbaugh's radio commentary) Some people feel that getting angered by their comments gives them power. However, in a situation like Haiti, they are DOING ACTUAL HARM by discouraging people from donating money.

-WHAT WOULD WE DO WITHOUT CNN??? They have TRULY provided exceptional coverage and outdone both MSNBC and Fox News from the moment the story broke.

However, I must say it was so REFRESHING and REASSURING to see the images of President's Obama, Bush, and Clinton. I truly felt proud to be an American. It's amazing the difference that President Obama has made in the atmosphere of this country.
