What's up with all the stereotypical black worldwide trending topics on Twitter? When I first started using Twitter, I had no idea how much of the discussion often focuses on Black culture. It's seeming more and more like African Americans make up the majority of users on Twitter. Yet again, we have more power than we really put to use. Here's an interesting topic that's trending right now...
#thingsblackgirlsdo
I've read many tweets where people are discouraged by the lack of "positive" TTs that are available. I hardly ever participate in trending topics, but I've noticed a few are downright stereotypical, especially the ones after Election Day.
ReplyDeleteI am @minusthebars I would love to follow you on Twitter.
ugh. i saw this trending topic and thought the same thing - they're just filled with stereotypes when those threads pop up and i always ignore 'em.
ReplyDelete@Don: Oh yeah, I remember the TTs right after Election day... unbelievable and so offensive. Suddenly African Americans supposed voting habits was a TT for the world to see... almost belittling us. Or we belittled ourselves...
ReplyDelete@Kay: Yes, like #thingsblackgirlsdo? Really? I'm trying to learn how to ignore them too, but I guess I'm still caught off guard and in disbelief at some of the trending topics about us. Unbelievable...
@Don: Oh yeah, I'll follow you on Twitter right now!
ReplyDeleteYou know what ... I agree. Depending upon one's mentality I definitely see how that particular trending topic can be viewed as either/or.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the follow on Twitter! I look forward to the subsequent tweets.
