Okay so, so far BET has actually done a thousand times better on this year's award show then I would have ever (understandably) expected. Still, this does NOT excuse or redeem BET from the shenanigans that go on for the other 364 days of programming. And of course they ended the show on a tacky classless note with Ludacris' performance, but that's to be expected. The after party was also a bit much... I mean, they should just scrap the whole on air after party thing if people are going to let it all lose on TV. Can't they just wait till the after after party? Anyway... I guess I demand too much class and quality when it has to do with the representation of my people.
Highlights of the show for me:
Chris Brown's MJ performance!!!!!! Just beautiful, excellent, emotional, quality, deserved, overdue, just... this brother has my FULL support. I am so sick of hearing people give this kid the third degree. So many other people, corporations, politicians have been let off the hook, but yet we're gonna HANG a (at the time) 19 year old boy? As if we don't know how wild and complex young relationships can get. And combine that youth with millions of dollars. It's not black and white. And I'm ALWAYS suspicious anytime the White media gets involved in the lynch mob..
Nia Long and Larenz Tate's "Brother To The Night: A Blues For Nina" re-enactment from Love Jones. My FAVORITE movie ever; it's a close tie between that and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. I mean, need I say more about Love Jones though? I have the DVD and the soundtrack. Nia looked AMAZING and Larenz can ALWAYS get it! lol Love to see beautiful black people and both of them are a class act. P.S. Larenz and I have the same birthday (smile).
El Debarge's performance. His voice was on point. He sounded almost exactly like the records. It was great to hear some throwbacks, just real quality love songs. Reminds me of how much talent artists had to have back in the day... as opposed to now.
