Every year I get sucked in and every year I am disappointed by the disaster... but yet I'll be watching tonight.. hoping for some semblance of quality television, but I probably won't get too much. After all, it's the BET Awards.
I will say that I am looking forward to a performance by Kanye (I'm feeling the elements of Black Power in his new single, and I don't like how the mainstream media tried to MJ him plus I've been a fan of Dwele for YEARS)... but that's pretty much it. And there are rumors on Twitter that Lauryn Hill will perform, but I'm not sure if that's really true. There's supposed to be a dedication to Prince and MJ... but if I know BET, it will be a hot mess, just like Jamie's offensive imitation of Michael last year and that hot mess of a dedication to MJ as well... *sigh*
At this point I only watch the BET Awards for pure entertainment purposes... I literally do not listen to 95% of the R&B and hip hop music of today. I would say my music interests are as follows:
Jill Scott, Sade, Corinne Bailey Rae, Maxwell, Janelle Monae, John Legend, Chris Brown (got to support the young brother), sometimes Trey Songz because he has a pretty good voice and I like to watch him swoon the ladies (which we haven't had in a while), Kanye West, reggae, soca, and the various types of African music. I even enjoy soundtracks from Bollywood movies. So one can see where my taste is... far from the mainstream sounds that dominate today's sound waves. Basically I like talent, quality, and creativity. True artistic creations.
Random questions tho as I watch the red carpet...
1. Why are Busta Rhymes and Fabolous still relevant?
2. Don't even get me started on Drake and Nicki Minaj as the supposed new faces of hip hop..
3. Why is Nick Cannon yelling, and why don't these shows ever use a good black journalism student who actually knows how to conduct an interview?
4. How can anyone take Gucci Mane seriously? And why can't I name any of his songs??
5. What in the world is Debra Lee wearing? #hotmess
6. When did LaLa become a celebrity?? lol I can't...
7. Nick Cannon has seemed so off since his marriage to Mariah, po thang...
8. Souljah Boy's performance... need I say more? lol
I don't want to sound bitter but I get annoyed by it appearing to the world that all this baseless foolishness is the face of Black America.
Anywho... I guess the show is starting in a couple minutes so let me watch and hope for better..
