Twin Bombings In Uganda: 74 Killed Including One American

What a sick world we live in... that terrorists would attack people as they were watching the World Cup final. For what? All I've casually read so far is something about Somali militants who may have connections to Al Qaeda. Not that that it makes any difference, but I have a little more of a clue into the psychology of these things when they happen to first world nations, but to other African ones? (ie the attacks in Nairobi several years ago) I don't get. And I hate to see Black people get swept up in the politics and religious extremism of it. That may be a dumbed down opinion, but I essentially wonder: what did other Africans ever do to you? Which makes me suspect that something outside of Africa orchestrated this - as usual. But then it could be Arabs living in Somalia who did this... but then who would actually relocate to Somalia? But then maybe you would do that to get closer to attacking Uganda?? Clearly, I have a thousand questions, and so I'll be researching this subject area today. It makes me sick to my stomach though. The pictures I've seen so far have been pretty graphic, so I'm not even going to place any of them up here...

I also have an acquaintance that about a month ago accepted a development position in Uganda. On Facebook she said the bombings happened not to far from where she lives and socializes, but that she is okay. I'm guessing she is slightly freaked out, but still remaining positive about her new job. Anyway, let me go read up on the background behind all of this - not that there is ever any justification.

Sidenote - I am staying the HECK out of Times Square and Grand Central Station if I can help it (unfortunately I have to catch the subway there today). I said it before after the attempts a few weeks ago in Times Square. I gotta get out of midtown Manhattan... I do not like being in a heavily targeted area at all. People walk through all aimlessly, but there's always this uneasy feeling in the back of my mind that I could very easily get caught up in something happening because of the area that I live in.

Meanwhile, here is the State Department's official response:

I join President Obama in strongly condemning today's attacks in Kampala, Uganda targeting innocent spectators watching the World Cup final.
We understand that American citizens may have been injured or killed and our embassy is reaching out to assist. Our condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims, in the United States and Uganda.
At this tragic moment, the United States stands with Uganda. We have a long-standing, close friendship with the people and Government of Uganda and will work with them to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice.

  1. I haven't seen any of the pictures but I co-sign your statements concerning the impossibility of such terrorist acts. Then again, if a person is willing to kill another, I am not sure if it's a question of when the murders take place. Overall, it's just a very unfortunate society in which we live.

For some reason, Times Square and Grand Central Station have become targeted areas probably due to being heavily populated.

  2. Don, it is truly unfortunate that this is what our society has come to... I guess all we can really do is be thankful for each day we have and just keep moving through life..

Nevertheless, I pay VERY close attention to my surroundings... I refuse to walk around cluelessly in Manhattan in the name of "not letting the terrorists win". Well, the whole Manhattan mentality just doesn't do it for me in the first place so...
